Toby Schreiber's Legacy for Ancient Greek Pottery Studies

Toby Schreiber, a professional potter at Malibu and author of the seminal book "Athenian Vase Construction: A Potter's Analysis" (Getty Museum 1999),  passed away on December 16, 2023. She was 98 years old.  The scholarly community of Greek pottery studies valued Toby's work in a myriad of ways. In Tucson we feel extremely lucky as Toby visited us a number of times and shared generously her passion and immense knowledge with our community on and off campus. She taught hands-on workshops to the campus community, reached out to K-12 at St Augustine Catholic High School, and she even participated in the first firing of the Greek kiln in 2005. Her more recent visit in 2014 was as a keynote speaker to the conference "As the Wheel Turns: Potters' Communities in Ancient Greece and the Mediterranean" (see her lecture here) She encouraged us all to look so much closer at the vases and understand their ancient makers.

Toby's  memorial has been live-streamed and is available online   (with a great slideshow of Toby's life  at around 1:48:00)
