The ancient wax tablet project recreated a reusable writing surface used in antiquity. This tablet had a wooden base with wax evenly spread on its surface. The malleable wax allowed for any written text to be smoothed out, and for the tablet to be used multiple times. This type of non-permanent surface was used in ancient education for the learning of alphabets, grammar, and other language memorization skills. In this reconstruction, a pine slab was cut in half,a rectangular divot was precisely cut into each half, melted beeswax was poured onto the carved surfaces of the wood, and the two halves were bound with twine to make a sort of wax tablet notebook.
