Project: Ancient Bread

In this project, B. Waddell recreated ancient baking methods to make ancient regional bread dishes. Among the baked goods were Athenian poppy seed bread and barley rolls of Lesbos. Recipes and methods were pulled from both ancient sources themselves (Hesiod) and modern scholarly materials about ancient baking techniques (R. Curtis' Ancient Food Technology).

The ancient wax tablet project recreated a reusable writing surface used in antiquity.

In this project, C.Doody and N.Williams recreated a portion of a  fresco found in the House of Xeste at Akrotiti, Thera.

Project: Ancient Hysplex

This project involves an experimental reconstruction by C. Martin at the University of Arizona of the Hysplex used in the stadium at Ancient Nemea.

Project: Ancient Greek Potter's Wheel

Prof. Eleni Hasaki and students in her classes have collaborated to build and operate a replica of an Ancient Greek potter's wheel. A number of professional potters have tested it and their times for completing various stages in the forming process have been recorded.

Project: Ancient Larnax

This experiment reconstructs a ceramic larnax. A Larnax in ancient Greece, as early as the Bronze Age, was used to hold the ashes of the deceased and in some cases an entire corpse folded in on itself. The final size of this larnax is 30.25 inches long by 13.5 inches wide by 13.5 inches high with an aapproximate weight of 115ibs. Often times, there would be decorations on the outer walls.
